THE WORKSHOP '08

The initiative named “Workshop di progettazione Poli.Design – Grechi Illuminazione” (Poli.Design – Grechi Illuminazione design workshop) mainly aimed on the one side at identifying new product concepts from the design point of view, and on the other at discovering new application contests. The idea came from the common awareness by the involved parties, that illumination, in the current conception of the term, is evolving and includes spheres that are becoming wider and wider, as well as increasingly tricky.

The organisation of the whole workshop was structured in different phases.

FIRST PHASE: the presentation of the works. During this phase, on July 1st 2008, 10 young designers delivered their design concept by means of neat multimedia presentations. The young designers competed for the selection of the most interesting project, which had to be feasible from the technical and commercial points of view.

SECOND PHASE: the development of the winner’s project. On Friday September 26th, the prizegiving took place for the project that was considered as the most innovative and marketable for the purposes of the workshop. The winner was Marco Brianza, who gained the competition with the concept of a LED product for street illumination and furniture. To get his way over the competitors, some innovatory features were crucial: they mainly concerned a simple design that is capable of easily blending with modern and functional street furniture. Besides these aspects, it perfectly complied with the requirements of an inexpensive and ecological product, which has obviously to be in line with the latest strict standards about safety and light pollution.

THIRD PHASE: marketing. At the end of the designing and selection phases, there was the engineering phase under the supervision of Grechi’s Technical Staff. This phase included the development of the feasibility study, the illuminating engineering project and all steps  that, by means of tests, 3D models and slight changes, made a designed project become a real and marketable product. This way, Giotto was born!
Poli.Design wanted to express its great satisfaction for this collaboration. First, as it was able to give the opportunity to the students to see their ideas be realized – as it is unlikely to happen in normal conditions for studies that deal with theory only.

Second, Poli.Design itself had the opportunity to directly and constructively deal with the entrepreneurial and working world – the real final target of the activity carried out by the Consorzio del Politecnico di Milano.
